Torno, Lake of Como, Italy

Torno is an unspoiled town yet well connected to both Como, Bellagio and the rest of the lake towns. Torno, one of the most picturesque villages on this lake shore. There are two churches of interest to see, San Giovanni with a marble portal from the 14th century and Santa Tecla. By the lake, surrounded by a garden, is the grand Villa Pliniana.

The church of San Giovanni is high above the older part of Torno, gazing out across the waters of Lake Como. It is a very ancient church.

Santa Tecla dates from the 1400s, with a rather lovely rose window, but was enlarged and restored in the 1700s. Its interior reflects that later recreation, but recent restorations have uncovered some medieval frescoes so it is worth entering to see those.

Casares is a picture postcard village which sits on a hilltop between the Ronda mountains and the Costa del Sol

To say that Casares is beautiful is an understatement. Most of the white villages are beautiful but there is something very special about the sight of Casares that causes the visitor to park the car and simply stare or take a photo.

Hundreds of white - washed homes perch precariously across the hillside, below the battlements of an old Arabic castle. Hold onto your sunhat though because the viewing point can sometimes be a real wind trap!

From here take one of the many paths leading down into the village and experience a perfect day exploring the multitude of steep, winding streets and footpaths that make up the delightful village of Casares.

Villa Borghese - Roma

Villa Borghese is Rome’s largest public park; it can be a pleasant refuge from the hectic Roman streets and offers a large number of touristy attractions, featuring a lake, temples, fountains, statues and several museums.

The artificial lake in the park has a temple dedicated to Aesculapius – the god of health. The temple is built on the island and was designed by Antonio Asprucci with beautiful Ionic columns.

We lived in Rome for seven years and visited the Villa Borghese gardens often, we used to rent a four person bike with a canopy, and the four of us explored the vast, beautiful grounds of the Borghese Gardens.

The Villa Borghese is the largest public park in Rome. It features a lake, temples, fountains, statues and several museums.
The park is located north of the Spanish Steps. Main entrances are at the Piazza del Popolo and the Porta Pinciana at the end of the Via Veneto. The Borghese Park is a pleasant refuge from the hectic streets in Rome.
The area started as a vineyard in the 16th century. In 1605 cardinal Scipione Borghese, a nephew of Pope Paul V, turned the vineyard into a park.
The landscaper Domenico Savino da Montepulciano designed a very formal park with geometric shapes, the first such park in Rome. A villa was built by the architect Flaminio Ponzio after a sketch from the cardinal himself.
The park was later laid out in a more natural way. At the end of the 18th century an artificial lake was created in the middle of the park. On the island in the lake, a small Ionic temple was built. It is dedicated to Aesculapius, the God of healing.
In 1903 the city of Rome obtained the Villa Borghese from the Borghese family and the park was opened to the public. The 80 hectare/148 acres large park now featured wide shady lanes, several temples, beautiful fountains and many statues.
In 1911 the World Exposition was held in this park. Dubbed the 'park of museums', the Villa Borghese park is also home to several museums.
The Museo e Galleria Borghese is housed in the Villa Borghese. The park also contains an amphitheater (the Piazza di Siena), an 18th century arch (the arco di Settimio Severo) and a botanical garden. You might also notice Triton statues which look exactly like those on the Fontana del Moro (Moor Fountain) at the Piazza Navona.

We visited Soriano nel Cimino twice and stayed at friends house.

Soriano is in Lazio, about one hour north of Rome. Soriano is built on a hill dominated by the Castello Orsini. It is a medieval town and the narrow, winding, cobble stone streets lend themselves to some wonderful exploring. The large central Piazza is the hub of village life.

There are several churches and church bells ring frequently. The town is built on a hilltop and has winding narrow roads and lots of steps. The train track actually goes under the town and out the other side of the hill.

Every year, during the first two weeks of October, Soriano nel Cimino hosts a festival that surrounds the chestnut harvest. This festival is done on a large scale, and attracts thousands of people from surrounding areas, including Rome. The two main events of the Sagra are the Palio and the Corteo Storico.

Austrian Town of Hallstatt

Arriving in Hallstatt is quite the experience in itself. With the train station on one side of lake and the village itself on the other, we took a ferry across the lake to get there and we were awarded with a spectacular first impression of this famous Alpine village.

The lake is 5 by 1½ miles, set in a mountain valley where the heavily forested dark green mountains seem to shoot straight up from the water’s edge, one of the greatest Alpine lake settings. Boat rides on the lake are available.

The local church is worth a visit. The charnel house in the graveyard contains bones, including painted skulls, of the local dead whose graves are dug up after 10 or 12 years to make room for new clients.

A funicular will whisk you up to the Salzwerk, or salt mine, in a valley above the town.

If you get the chance also visit nearby Obertraun for a tour of the ice caves.

We have traveled to Greece many times, and we have found it to be a country with very friendly people, excellent food and beautiful scenery.

Mykonos is a Greek island and one of the top and famous international tourist destinations, around the world for its cosmopolitan character and its strong nightlife. The island is part of the Cyclades, lying between Tinos, Siros, Paros Greece and Naxos. The Mykonos island has spectacular beaches with crystal clear green color water. The largest town is Mykonos, also known as Chora , which lies on the west coast.

Mykonos town however offers a different architectural style that is unique in the area. Here, flanking the narrow winding streets are buildings reminiscent of a medieval style.

Every house is reached via a flight of straight steps, parallel to the road, whilst the space underneath these steps was traditionally kept for storage. Atop the steps is a wooden painted balcony that sometimes projects over the road to nearly touch the balcony of the house across the street. Here too, you will find a change from the ubiquitous blue and white decor of Greece. In Mykonos town the wooden structures of every house are painted in a rainbow of colours, against the whitewashed walls and blue sky, the effect is absolutely delightful.

It was our first visit to Parga, and can certainly see us returning in the future.

Parga is a picturesque small town on the north-western coast of Greece, in the area called Epirus. Parga town is situated in a sheltered bay and its houses climb the mountainside from seaside to the top. It’s got a castle, one large beach on the other side of the mountain called Valtos Beach, two smaller beaches in town, an island across the bay with a chapel on, a pier for the tour boats and fishing boats in the middle of town and another beach a couple of kilometers south of town in the next village called Lichnos beach.

Garden design has been an important Japanese art for many centuries. Traditional Japanese landscape gardens can be broadly categorized into three types, Tsukiyama Gardens (hill gardens), Karesansui Gardens (dry gardens) and Chaniwa Gardens (tea gardens).

The name Tsukiyama refers to the creation of artificial hills. Tsukiyama gardens vary in size and in the way they are viewed. Smaller gardens are usually enjoyed from a single viewpoint, such as the veranda of a temple while many larger gardens are best experienced by following a circular scrolling path.

Karesansui gardens reproduce natural landscapes in a more abstract way by using stones, gravel, sand and sometimes a few patches of moss for representing mountains, islands, boats, seas and rivers. Karesansui gardens are strongly influenced by Zen Buddhism and used for meditation.

Chaniwa gardens typically feature stepping stones that lead towards the tea house, stone lanterns and a stone basin (tsukubai), where guests purify themselves before participating in the ceremony.

Kyoto - used to be the capital of Japan from 794 through 1868, Kyoto today is a small city with tremendous cultural assets.

Kiyomizu-dera ("pure water temple"), This is a 1000-year-old temple with a great view of the city below.

Saiho-ji, you have to make reservations and pay $30. You can only visit at a couple of set times each day. You have to participate in a 20-minute Buddhist ceremony. After the service you can walk in peace around the garden, which contains 120 different kinds of moss.

Dry Gardens - Kyoto is the birthplace of the Zen dry landscape garden. A dry garden is built on a base of raked pebbles that may suggest water.

Koi - Kyoto's temples keep lovely collections of Koi. Some of the carp may be rotated from a temple's collection into a "mud pond" where the minerals bring their color up..

Arashi-yama - at the west edge of Kyoto. It's the Iwata-yama monkey research station located in the mountains overlooking Kyoto. Not only can you find great mountain scenery, but you will be literally surrounded by wild monkeys.

Kinkakuji is an impressive structure built overlooking a large pond, and is the only building left of Yoshimitsu's former retirement complex. It has burned down numerous times throughout its history including twice during the Onin War, a civil war that destroyed much of Kyoto; and once again more recently in 1950 when it was set on fire by a fanatic monk. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955. Kinkakuji was built to echo the extravagant Kitayama culture that developed in the wealthy aristocratic circles of Kyoto during Yoshimitsu's times. Each floor represents a different style of architecture.

The gardens hold a few other spots of interest including Anmintaku Pond that is said to never dry up, and statues that people throw coins at for luck.

Continuing through the garden takes you to the Sekkatei Teahouse, added to Kinkakuji during the Edo Period, before you exit the paid temple area. Outside the exit are souvenir shops, a small tea garden where you can have matcha tea and sweets (500 yen) and Fudo Hall, a small temple hall which houses a statue of Fudo Myoo, one of the Five Wisdom Kings and protector of Buddhism. The statue is said to be carved by Kobo Daishi, one of the most important figures in Japanese religious history.

Adinath Temple is a temple of great reverence dedicated to Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankar. This temple is situated towards the north of the Parshvanatha Temple, which is the largest Jain Temple in Khajuraho. The Adinath temple is the last Jains shrine, which was built in the devotion of Lord Adinath. The temple is excellently built and decorated with numerous sculptures including the figures of "yakshis".

The temple has been repaired and restored over the years. Though a Jain Temple, it looks very similar to the various Hindu temples in Khajuraho. The sanctum sanctorum houses a black image of the deity and this clearly indicates it being a Jain temple. It is actually a small temple but displays brilliant architecture. There are many fine carvings on the three bands of sculptures in it.

The temple's "shikar" is quite simple and plain to look at. On the top of it there is an elegant pitcher. The roof built in lotus like stone makes the sanctum look lovelier. Also, it seems as it the altar has been built later. On the walls of the temple there are figures of the court musicians that have been carved beautifully.

As the name suggests, Adinath temple in Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh is dedicated to Adinath the Jain saint. This is the last of Jain temples built around here. The temple is magnificently decorated with different sculpted figures including those of "yakshis".

The Adinath temple is situated adjacent to the Parshvanatha Temple, which is the largest of all the Jain temples in Khajuraho. This Adinath temple has been partly repaired over the centuries. This temple is quite similar to the Hindu temples in Khajuraho. Though a Jain temple, it looks more or less like a Hindu temple owing to its architecture and designing. A black image inside the temple gives the indication of it being a Jain temple. The temple has very fine carvings on its 3 bands of sculptures.

Adinath temple is towards the north of the largest Jain temple, the Parshvanatha temple. It is a small temple; its 'shikhar' is simple with a graceful and elegant auspicious pitcher on the top of it. The temple's sanctum is simple as well and it seems that the altar had been built at some time later than the construction of the temple. These Rajasthan National parks are located in many places across the state but some are exceptionally good.

When in Jaipur another halt that you cannot miss is the Ranthambore National Park. This is a tiger reserve country where we saw one tigers with many other animals like the deer and monkeys. There are three lakes here where crocodiles live. We wanted to enjoy a boat ride in this lake, but sadly it was not permissible. We found a large varieties of birds and fauna that won our heart. Beauty could be seen and felt everywhere. Inside the park there is also a historical fort that I think is worth seeing.

One should visit the city of Jaipur to experience the heritage and city along with the magnanimous cultural Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary to enjoy some adventurous sight seeing.

Thommankuth waterfalls is another marvellous wonder of the nature situated at 74 kms from Cochin. There are buses from Thodupuzha, which is 18 kms away from Thommankuth. Hotels and restaurants are available at Thodupuzha.

Palaruvi Waterfalls This waterfall falls in the border of Kerala and Tamilnadu. Its access is 35 kilometers east of Punalur on the Quilon - Shenkottah road. It is near Ariankavu mountain pass. 5 kilometers away is the spectacular Palaruvi waterfall at an attitude of 300 ft. with smaller cascades nearby. There you can see ruins of ancient temples. The water is said to be medicated as it flows down from the forest and is said to be a preventive for many diseases.

Mulamkuzhi this is a tiny village nearly 15kms from Malayattur. The crystal clear medicated water of the River Mulamkuzhi and the waterfalls of Venanbravady near Malayattur is an enchanting sight. There is also a confluence of the rivers Periyar and Perumthode.
Attukal this place is located between Munnar and Pallivasal, and a beautiful sight of waterfalls and rolling hills can be seen here. Attukal is also ideal for long treks .

The Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls are located between Narimangalam and Adimali on the kochi-Madurai highway. The Cheeyapara waterfalls cascade down in seven steps. It is a real feast for the eyes.

Nyayamkad 10kms from Munnar, located between Munnar and Rajamala Nyamkad is a land of breathtaking waterfalls. The Waters cascade down a hill from a height of about 1600 meters, the enchanting surrounding make an excellent picnic spot and trekking point.

Thusharagiri lying 50kms east of Kozhikode, Thusharagiri is a little tribal tourist spot in Kerala. Tow streams originating from the Western Ghats meet here to form the River Challipuzha. The river diverges into three waterfalls, creating a snowy spray, which gives the name 'Thusharagiri' which means 'snowy peak'. A 5km trek upstream will take one to the stream's origin. Of the three waterfalls, the highest is the Thenpara that drops 75 metres below.

The Kesari waterfalls, also known as Valanjamkanam falls, lies between Kuttikanam and Murinjapuzha on the Kottayam-Kumaly route. Valanjamkanam is a 3 hr. journey from Kottayam by any bus to Kumaly; trek to Kuttikanan offers additional adventurous spirit and closeness to nature.

Maramala Waterfall, this lies a few kms away from Eerattupetta. It is exactly 7 kms from Teekoy rubber estate. From here a private vehicle can take you further 2 kms after which the road is not motor able. To reach the falls one has to trek through the estate over the rocky path. The waterfall is about 60 metres in height, falling into a 12-meter deep pool and joins the River Teekoy way down.
A Dhoni waterfall is a 3 hours trek from the base of the Dhoni Hills. A thick reserve forest surrounds it. Dhoni is about 15kms from Palakkad.

A Meenvallam waterfall, is around 8kms from Thuppanad junction on the Palakkad- Manarkkad route. It is a combination of enchanting beauty and scenic splendor. The water falls from nearly 20 to 25 feet and the depth is around 15-20 feet. There are 10 steps of waterfalls of which eight are located in the upper hills inside the dense forest. They are inaccessible, only the remaining two steps are accessible. One has to hire a jeep from Koomankund junction and then trek a distance of 1.5 km by crossing the river Thuppanad.

Perumthenaruvi is a famous waterfall on the banks of the River Pamba. Here, the water flows down a rocky bed into a ravine 60 to 100 feet deep. The place is a favourite picnic spot for both domestic and foreign tourists.

Aruvi Waterfalls, 60 kms from Thiruvananthapuram and 7kms from Bonecaud estate are the beautiful Aruvi Waterfalls in the Peppara forest range. This 4 feet cascade is one of the most verdant and untouched spots in Kerala. Road accessibility is only up to Bonecaud, there on; the Kanni tribesmen accompany trekkers along the mountain path. Prior permission from the forest department is required before approaching the area.

Kombaikani and Meenmutti Waterfalls, these are two magnificent waterfalls on the upper reaches of the Neyyar Reservoir. A trek of 2kms through dense forests, would take one to Meenmutti waterfalls and a further 2kms, to the Kombaikani waterfalls. The waterfalls and forecasts around them are worth experiencing.
Chethalayam Waterfalls, is located 12kms from Sultan Bathery. One has to trek around 4kms from Chethalayam for having a glimpse of this lovely waterfall.
Kanthanpara Waterfalls, this waterfall is about 30 m in height and gives a panoramic view. It is located 12 kms southeast of Kalpetta.
Meenmutty Waterfalls, has a cascading waterfall in three tiers, from a height of 500 metres. It is located 12kms east of Meppadi.
Sentinal Rock Waterfall, is 22kms at Soochipara near Meppadi, south of Kalpetta. A three step water fall of more than 200m in height with a fantastic scenery provides for white water rafting, swimming, bathing, etc., The tree top huts at Soochipara will give unique view of the valleys of Western Ghats. It is also an ideal place for rock climbing.
Soochipara Waterfalls, is located 22kms from Hotel Green Gates. One can reach the waterfalls only after a 2-km walk into the dense equatorial forest of Wayanad.

They are black and white animals with round heads, small black ears and white faces. They have a black patch around each eye. They have short tails. They walk on all fours and can climb trees, often doing so to find a place to sleep. An adult Giant Panda is about 150 centimeters long and weighs about 90 kilograms, although the biggest one ever weighed was 180 kilogram.

Giant Pandas live in bamboo forests in the mountains of western China. The forests are very thick and the pandas are generally hidden from view, so it has been hard for scientists to learn about them. This lack of knowledge adds to the difficulty of saving the pandas.

Once they were found throughout China, but the bamboo forests in eastern China have been cut down for farming. This has made the forest areas into 'islands', making it impossible for the bears to roam widely and meet each other to mate.

About 99% of the Giant Panda's food is bamboo, though it also eats grass, roots, plants and even meat. Bamboo is actually a type of grass that grows as tall as trees. Although there are hundreds of kinds of bamboo, the Giant Panda eats only 4 or 5 kinds.

As a frequent visitor to Puerto Vallarta we had plenty of time to explore and get to know the place - the beaches are beautiful, people are friendly and weather is absolutely wonderful. We took the bus trip into Puerto Vallarta several times people there were great several times a guitar playing and singing local boarded the bus and everyone was serenaded for the whole trip. The shopping and the bartering was fun and the cobblestone streets and wonderful old architecture was amazing.

Grenada is called The Spice Isle: Cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mace, allspice, orange/citrus peels, wild coffee and nutmeg are all important exports.

Grenada Island has a rain forested interior. Wonderful Caribbean beaches line the coast and outstanding scuba diving surrounds the island. St George’s is the largest town and has one of the most picturesque waterfronts in all of the Caribbean.

Carriacou, an island truly on island time. This petite isle has a relaxed air where endearing locals and an eclectic village life add to the sublime atmosphere. Over on Petit Martinique even less happens – and the locals like it that way.

Guana Island off the coast of Tortola is one of the last remaining privately-owned islands left in the Caribbean.

Some of Guana’s seven white-sand beaches are only accessible by boat. And with three (3) surrounding reefs, fabulous Caribbean snorkeling is available.

Considered by scientists to have one of the strongest concentrations of flora and fauna in the world, Guana is a designated wildlife sanctuary with mountain trails and a range of endangered species. High elevations offer incredible views Guana’s biodiversity.

The Riviera Maya is famous for large scale all-inclusive resorts and smaller boutique hotels on or near the beaches. A major attraction throughout the Riviera Maya are coastal and reef aquatic activities dependent on the coastal water and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

The beautiful beaches and fantastic weather are two of reasons that Riviera Maya coastline is a big destination for tourists and vacationers. Riviera Maya boasts the ultimate beach weather. The beaches of Cancun and Playa del Carmen are simply stunning and the crystal clear waters are perfect for swimming, snorkeling or diving.

The island of Saint Martin. It has 37 beaches total, with hotels holding property on most of them. Beach Bars and Cafes are very popular attractions on the island. They offer exquisite cuisines with European and Caribbean inspiration. Frozen cocktails are also a trendy treat to keep down the heat.

Maho Bay beach. The beach is situated at the end of the airport's runway, meaning large aircraft fly just feet over your head. Just beyond Maho Bay is Mullet Bay; some say it has the nicest beach on the island, with food and drink vendors and beach lounger rentals but few facilties.

Saba: It is not a reef island, it does not have the sandy beaches most notable in the Caribbean, but rather mostly cliff faces and rocky shores. The island, however, attracts tourists for the diverse and vibrant ecosystem and the unique diving experience (pinnacle diving, wall diving, etc...).

Bonaire is a Caribbean island East of Central America and North of Venezuela. The island is great for scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, windsurfing, kite boarding, mountain bike, sea kayaking, sailing bird watching.

Antigua and Barbuda: Antigua the southern and larger island; Barbuda the northern island of the main pair. Redonda a small uninhabited island 54km to the west of Antigua. Saint John's - Capital of the island of Antigua and Barbuda. Condrigton a town on the island of Barbuda.

Antigua: there are many reefs off the eastern coastline and as a result, there is some pretty awesome fish to see. Snorkeling is also pretty good here, as the water is very clear, and it's a lot cheaper! Snorkeling on the Western side is spotty to non-existent. Some of the locals recommended Darkwood beach as a location with good snorkeling off right off the beach. While the beach is stunningly beautiful and gloriously uncrowded, most of the "reef" is actually just grass.

Barbuda hosts a huge frigate bird colony, making it one of the few places in the world to view frigate birds at very close range.

Caribbeans

Bahamas:

The Bahamas are a truly a nature lover's paradise. The islands are formed of oolitic limestone which has been dramatically carved by wind and water to form breathtaking cliffs and overhangs. Although the soil is thin, it supports lush foliage that seems to grow from the rock itself.

The Bahamas' most popular activities is swimming and diving in the clear waters; lounging on white sandy beaches; and hiking and bird-watching in the national parks.

Bahamas beaches are incredibly varied. Six-mile long Cable Beach on New Providence Island is lined by shops, casinos, restaurants, bars, and water-sports operators. Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is flanked by mega-resorts and can be crowded. Treasure Cay in the Abacos, a stunning, almost empty, 3.5 mile flour-white strip great spot for whoever is interested for solitude. Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island is a popular spot for destination weddings. Gold Rock Beach is part of Lucayan National Park, a protected area that contains some of Grand Bahama’s wildest, most secluded, and gorgeous beaches.

Barbados:

River Bay, which is located in the north of the Island in the parish of St Lucy. River Bay is an extremely beautiful place to visit in Barbados. I had a great couple of hours there enjoying the views from the cliffs overlooking the bay.

Cotton House Bay would be a great place for a romantic picnic at the beach.

Brighton beach is much loved beach by many local people and tourists alike, and that it can be packed at the weekends, with loads of people enjoying themselves in the gentle and warm waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao:

The main island Curacao is considered as the commercial port since centuries. In the capital Willemstad you will find many colonials buildings from the 18th centuries.

Bonaire has become a top destination for scuba diving due to
it' s coral reefs.

The capital is Kralendijk and the village Rincon. The main attraction in Kralendijk are the pastel colored houses and the harbor promenade. Bonaire has also pink colored beach, known as Pink Beach, which is great or sunbathing.

Aruba has the best touristic infrastructure of all three islands.

The capital is Oranjestad with a population of 20,000 is rather quiet. The colonial buildings have Dutch and Spanish influence and are worth seeing. The Schooner Market is a floating market where sellers come from nearby Venezuela. The beaches in Aruba are considered to be the best in the Caribbean and the most beautiful of all is the Palm Beach where many hotels are built.

Fiji Islands

Nadi:

One of the largest towns and most visitors’ first stop on Fiji, Nadi is a culturally diverse city of 30,000. Nadi Beach is a wide strand, perfect for lazing in the sun and watching sunsets. Nearby Natadola Beach is Fiji’s most spectacular and is popular for swimming and body surfing. Places to visit in Nadi include Sri Siva Subramaniya, largest Hindu temple in the Southern hemisphere, the Sleeping Giant orchid gardens and Waqadra Botanical Gardens. Ferries leave Nadi for the Mamanuca Islands.

Wailoaloa Beach, at a 1/2 mile long the beach located in the northern area of Nadi. There are multiple beach clubs and resorts located on this stretch.

The Newtown Beach has public access as well, it is located about 10 minutes away from Nadi town by bus.

Nadi Garden of the Sleeping Giant. Originally started to make a place for the private collection of tropical orchids of Canadian actor Raymond Burr, this garden now houses many beautiful plants and trails for walking.

Denarau Island:
Is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Fiji Islands, with some of Fiji's most favorite resorts and hotels located here.. It is ideally situated for trips to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands from the newly upgraded Port Denarau Marina.

The Mamanuca group of islands is located just a few kilometers off the western side of Fiji's main island of Viti Levu. It is one of Fiji's most popular resort destinations with a number of beautiful islands and reefs. With names such as Treasure Island, Beachcomber Island, Tokoriki and Vomo to name a few, these islands instill a feeling of palm tree fringed beaches and pristine blue lagoons.

The Yasawa Islands is one of Fiji's most popular destinations for the travelers looking for the white sandy beaches and tropical island resorts. These islands are located just off the north western side of Viti Levu and are easily accessed by boat transfers and cruise ships from Denarau Marina and Loutoka.

The Coral Coast stretches along the beaches of Fiji's main island linking Natadola in the West to Waidroka Bay in the East. It has one of the largest fringing coral reefs in the world. Dotted with stunning white beaches and ringed by a turquoise coral reef and a deep blue Pacific Ocean the Queens Highway meanders through stunning scenery, Fijian villages, sugar cane fields and lush hills.

Taking the Queens Highway north out of Nadi, past the Sugar City of Lautoka, you will quickly find yourself on the stunning northern coastline of Viti Levu, known as The Sun Coast.

A largely undiscovered area of rocky mountains rising up against tropical seas and magnificent coral reefs, dotted with only a handful of resorts. This area is simply breathtaking.

Vanua Levu is the second largest island in Fiji and is similar in nature to the main island of Viti Levu. However, the friendly island is far less populated and developed than its larger sister. North of the finger, across Natewa Bay (the largest bay in the South Pacific), is the undeveloped region of Udu Point where small fishing villages line the coast.

Taveuni is one of the most popular destinations in the Fiji Islands. Taveuni has magnificent reefs, mountains, rain forest, volcanic formations, mangroves, abundant wildlife and flora, as well as one of the friendliest people on earth.

Pacific Harbour is the "Adventure Capital of Fiji" and is two and a half hour drive from Nadi Airport by the scenic 'Coral Coast' road and only 45 minutes from Suva.

Suva City is the political and commercial capital of the Fiji Islands and is the South Pacific's largest and most cosmopolitan city.

The Lomaiviti archipelago is a group of islands between Viti Levu and the Lau Islands.

This traditional and remote island lies about 100km off the main island of Viti Levu. Kadavu is a rugged island almost 60km in length and 14km wide with high volcanic peaks, rolling hills and many indented bays. There are few roads on the island and travel by small boats is the easiest and often only way to get about. The dense rain forests offer good hiking trails, some nice waterfalls and several endemic species of birds including the colorful and noisy Kadavu parrot (kaka) and the more elusive whistling dove, honey eater and fantail. Life in Kadavu boasts a very traditional culture with its 12,000 inhabitants living in 70 small fishing villages around the coast, isolated from the world. Fiji Cultures and Cuisine

The Fiji culture is a colorful nation filled with a mix of music, dance, family, food, craft and their love for sport, especially rugby.

This musical nation is bought together by singing, you often hear the lovely sound of their songs echoing around the villages. The people also have strong religious beliefs, the ceremonies influenced by music and singing. Dance is also a very important part in both the Fijian and Indian cultures.

Music of Old Fiji consisted of various chants which often told a story or preserved information to be passed on from generation to generation. With the introduction of European and Asian cultures Music in Fiji has evolved and songs sung in the Fijian vernacular are popular but so also are songs in Indian and English. Some local artist mix all three languages and traditional instruments from each culture making for a very unique musical experience.

The Fijian food is a fusion of flavors of both the cultures, the coconut and root vegetables of the Fijians and the spices and curries of the Indians.

In general, native Fijians and the Fijian-Indian populations use their hands to eat. Meals are eaten on the floor while the family sits on mats.

Common food of Fiji:
Rice, taro, breadfruit, sweet potatoes, cassava, fish & coconut

Family is one of the most important parts of the Fiji culture. The Fijians often live in close nit villages with cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents, all caring and providing for each other and the village as a whole community. Art and craft is also a large part of their villages and heritage especially for the women.

Fiji's arts and crafts reflect local adaptations of their Polynesian and Melanesian heritage. An indigenous art form is the Meke, which may incorporate the sea-sea (women fan dance) or a meke wesi (men spear dance). It is usually a narrative of an important event such as a war, a chiefly installation, or even a scandal. Some mekes are generations old, and form an important part of Fiji's oral history.

Each district of Fiji has its own form of meke, performed in the local dialect. Other forms of Polynesian and Melanesian dance art forms exist with most widely known being dances of Rotuma and Tonga. There are also various Indian dances and Chinese dances which are performed at relevant festivals marking important times for these communities which are now a part of Culture in Fiji.

We rented bicycles to tour Amsterdam's beautiful flat landscape and stunning architecture. We enjoyed exploring Amsterdam’s 165 canals and appreciating the serenity of its vivid public gardens and bustling flower markets.

Exploring Amsterdam, we discovered a diversity of interesting museums and shops: Amsterdam boasts an eclectic variety of museums, many of which are heralded as the best in Europe. Make sure you visit Amsterdam's famous Van Gogh museum and the Rembrandt House museum to see the work of two Dutch art masters. Amsterdam's Rijks museum and Cobra museum also host outstanding collections of traditional and modern art respectively.

Rotterdam is one of Holland's most beautiful cities. A former European Capital of Culture, its stunning architecture and vibrant live jazz cafes make it a popular destination with cultural explorers in Holland.

The Hague we found a city with an energetic international atmosphere that is the toast of Holland, with a stunning town center and some of Holland's most famous sculptures.

Exploring The Hague we certainly enjoyed the city's greener areas, such as the walled palace garden behind Noordeinde Palace..

Visiting Maastricht and we loved the unique mix of old and new buildings the city had to offer, as well as its plethora of museums and fun shops. Taking a trip to the Bonnefanten Museum, we enjoyed its important collection of old masters and contemporary art.

We also enjoyed to visiting Utrecht boasts a wealth of medieval architecture. When you travel to Utrecht, make sure you see the 112 meter high Dom Tower the tallest church tower in Holland.

England

Aberffraw: was once an important port, but the estuary gradually silted up, leaving the present coastline of sand dunes. The dunes range as high as 30 feet and more. The sculptured sand is stabilized by mar-ram grass near the sea, and patches of sea holly can be found in autumn. The buildup of dunes has also created the inland lake of Llyn Coron.

Cornwall: with its whitewashed seaside villages and greener-than-green countryside dotted with Celtic ruins, the Cornish peninsula is a hybrid of historical attractions and natural beauty. From its subtropical gardens to its steep cliffs that cascade into the Atlantic, Cornwall has an island feel, and is, in fact, almost an island, nearly separated from the rest of Britain by the Tamar River.

The Ceredigion Heritage Coast is divided into four separate sections totaling 21 miles, including several nature reserves and marine conservation areas, a testament to the wide variety of bird and animal populations it supports. A partial list of birds to be seen includes cormorants, coughs, raven, peregrine, and buzzard.

The coast has everything; rugged headlands jutting out into the sea, small fishing villages and harbors, sandy beaches, isolated coves, and cliff top grasslands. Just as importantly, the coast is sparsely visited, leaving visitors with the peace and quiet to explore without crowds. There are traditional seaside holiday centers at New Quay and Aberystwyth, but away from these areas the coast has plenty of secluded corners.

Penbryn, near Aberporth, boasts long, sandy beaches backed by sand dunes and woodland trails along the coast.

The headland at Dinas is one of the most spectacular along the Pembroksehire Coast (which is saying a great deal). At 463 feet in height, the cliffs at Dinas Head provide excellent views across Fish guard Bay to the south and Newport Bay to the north. The headland is under the care of the National Trust.

Dorset is a county of great beauty, a land of contrast and breathtaking scenery. It is one of the maritime counties of southern England, fronting the English Channel which separates the United Kingdom from mainland Europe. Its coastline extends some 140 kilometers from Lyme Regis in the west to Christchurch in the east, and offers a selection of the finest sandy beaches to be found in the British Isles.

This coastline is notable for its color, as well as its ecological value; the red Devon sandstone of the cliffs is broken by the startling white chalk of the Beer headland. The cliffs are split by deep wooded combes and isolated coves and topped by heath and grassland.

Exmoor Heritage Coast: this is England's highest coastline and the striking "hog-back" cliffs tower over the Bristol Channel. The cliffs are sliced by steep, wooded combes. In some places oak woods have grown right down the cliffs, bringing the rare sight of woodland and seashore life mingling on the pebbled beaches.

Lynton and Lynmouth are like twins, one village complementing the other. Lynmouth is wedged between a steep cliff and the ocean on North Devon's coast, while Lynton looks down from the 500ft (152m) high cliff top on her twin. The views from either are glorious. You can see, on a clear day, across to the Welsh coast.

But proximity is about all these twins have in common. Lynmouth is a traditional fishing village with stone houses, and Lynton is a Victorian-Edwardian village, many of its homes turned into seaside villas and hotels.

Corsica - The mountains and the sea make it a unique place.

Hydra Island, Greece

Hydra is perhaps the most beautiful port village in all of Greece. A tiny harbor ringed with cafes, restaurants and gold shops is surrounded by a village of stone houses and villas that rise up the hills like an amphitheater. But one of the best things about Hydra is that there are no cars. Everything is moved by donkey, including groceries, building supplies, people and their luggage.

There are many paths through the hills that lead to small settlements, monasteries and churches and a walk in springtime will introduce you to the islands large array of wildflowers. We walked to the Monastery of Profiti Illias and it took us an hour but the view is worth it. There are still monks living there.

Swimming in Hydra in the rather clear and deep waters can be done only rock diving.

Santorini, Greece

The world famous island of Santorini is the southern most island of the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea, and is located 63 nautical miles north of Crete.

Santorini is one of the most magical islands of Greece. It is a barren, rocky island just opposite a volcano, with black and red beaches and towns situated on high cliffs offering breathtaking views and fantastic sunsets. Santorini has a dramatic beauty as opposed to lush and green islands.

Santorini is like three islands. One side is the caldera with the villages of Thira, Imerovigli, Firastefani and Oia perched so far above the sea that it may as well be a painting. This is the commercial part of Santorini. This part of the island brings in most of the money and is completely dependent on it's image to attract the visitors.

Perissa and Kamari are full of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops. There are supermarkets, campsites and even some kind of water park for kids in Perissa. Both Kamari and Perissa have diving centers. On the way to these beaches you pass through towns like Megalochori and Emborio which are agricultural communities that held out til the last minute before giving in to tourism, where you can still find restaurants that are filled with mostly Greeks.

The third part of Santorini is Akrotiri, known of course for the famous ruins from the Minoan period. The actual village of Akrotiri is not as well known and that is for a number of reasons. The main reason is that the road to the archaeological site does not even go through the town.

There is not much to see in Akrotiri town. People go about their work. They are farmers mostly or engaged in some kind of craft. Probably many of the people work in hotels and restaurants around the island. But it is a quiet village and enjoyable to wander around in. There is an old fortress at the top of the town which was destroyed during the earthquake in 1956. This was the site of the town and instead of restoring it they rebuilt the town below the fortress. You can still go up and wander around. From the top of the village you can see the caldera of the volcano and miles of grapes. In fact you can see most of the island.
